Here’s Some Things

Hello, Internet-land. I don’t have anything concrete (or abstract) to bitch about today, so instead please accept a truncated account of life for the last little while. Guess I’ll go with the most important (or at least most memorable) stuff first, and we’ll just kind of get to the rest. Read the rest of this page »

I’m Not Mad…

Preface: This post is kind of a philosophical one, based on my own observations. If you’re not in the mood for something like that, go elsewhere. If you are, read on. I’m still not promising you’ll like it, though.

I often wonder if my expectations are too high. There are times when I just want so badly for people to be better than they are. Maybe even better than they are capable of being in the first place. I don’t feel bad about this attitude because I apply it first and foremost to myself. I think the disappointment starts when I realize nobody else is playing along. People are happy with themselves for the most part, even when it’s obvious to those around them that they shouldn’t be. It leads me to wonder: is it just me, or do people just suck? Is it like this everywhere? Why do we all have to act like we hate each other unless we’ve met and have already established a friendship? Are we really this territorial, this barbaric? And what ever happened to doing someone a favor? Read the rest of this page »

Huck I’m Fungry

I’m in my office at work, and there’s a smell of something awesome coming from the microwave down the hall. It reminds me that I’m starving and broke. Boo. While I’ll have to wait till payday to fix one of those things (don’t worry, it’s only six days away), the other will be dealt with tomorrow… and probably for several days after, if the leftover amounts of years prior are anything to go by. I think it’s gonna be a good, if sleepy, weekend. This will be a good change of pace from the last several good, definitely not sleepy, weekends. Read the rest of this page »

The Empire Strikes of the Jedi

Guess I’ll set the mood first: I’m sitting on the couch upstairs, laptop in front of me, cats curled up on each other to my right, massive bowl of popcorn to my left. I’m watching “The Empire Strikes Back” right now. I love this movie, and this is my first time watching it in BluRay. Good times. The only light is coming from the TV and this laptop. I’m content with this situation. Read the rest of this page »

That’s Life

I’m seeing a lot of talk lately about “the 99%” vs “the top 1%”. I understand the frustration of struggling while knowing how good some others might have it. And yeah, it sucks. A lot of them are trust fund babies, or greedy bankers/brokers… a good number of them are really no different than anyone else, though. Where do you think the big, scary corporation comes from? It was once a small business, same as you or anybody else could form. Apple was started in a garage for fuck’s sake, by someone with no business acumen or college education. And there’s another number out there, one we’re starting to hear a bit more about, and that’s “the 53%”. From what I understand, the 53% refers to the percentage of Americans who go to work, pay their taxes, and don’t take advantage of any of the programs their taxes pay for (Medicare/Medicaid, Social Security, unemployment benefits, etc). Where, I wonder, do I see myself? Read the rest of this page »

On Steve Jobs

I am a technician by trade, and a writer by passion. Given those facts, of course I felt compelled to write something about Steve Jobs. He had a profound impact on the IT industry, and on the way people interact with technology — and each other — in general. I was always an admirer of his, even when I was cursing “this damn iPhone“, and I absolutely respected him. So, here’s how I’m feeling about this whole thing. Read the rest of this page »

Hedonism!

I don’t think most people like to see other people be happy. In fact, I think most people hate it. It reminds them that they are unhappy, and it brings up feelings of inadequacy. This can really be a problem when you don’t approve of the method of happiness you are witnessing. A lonely straight guy sees a happy gay couple, and not only is he just as jealous as he would be seeing a happy straight couple, there’s also a twinge of something else there. A sort of insult to injury he feels, which then compels him to go online and spew hate against the first gay-related topic or individual he encounters. I’ve seen it! On the Internet! I think I have a solution. Read the rest of this page »

Little Death

Summer is almost over, and I’d like to take a few minutes to recall all I’ve learned. Starting with what I’ve learned most recently, and probably ending there because I don’t remember too much before it. At least I’m honest. Read the rest of this page »

Robots & Stuff

Anybody who knows me, like any of the fives of people who read this, know that I am passionate about technology. It’s a big part of my life professionally, and it’s the dominant force in my life outside of the office as well. Sadly, I think it’s going to plateau soon. Not because we won’t be able to come up with cool new gizmos and/or gadgets, but because we will start to fear what it will do to us as people. The potential is there for it to destroy jobs in a way never imagined outside of science fiction, and more and more I see it as kind of a growing elephant in the room. I really think it will come to that eventually. I believe the sooner we start talking about it, the sooner we can figure out ways to employ people in the New World. Everybody knows we use robots in manufacturing. And yes, everyone knows this has resulted in a number of human lay-offs. It’s just the way of things. I think it’s possible for human job loss to be a positive force, though. Let’s take, oh I don’t know… politicians for example.  Read the rest of this page »
